Servers
St. George's has a small friendly team of servers. Servers assist the
clergy at services, ensuring that everything goes smoothly
and that all the things needed for the service are in the right place
at the right time. There are a number of functions and
responsibilities the servers perform and the most common of these are:
Acolyte. The
acolyte's functions include carrying the ceremonial lights. The term is
commonly used generally of those who serve
at the altar.
Crucifer. The person who carries the processional cross on liturgical or ceremonial occasions.
Book Bearer. The book bearer carries the Gospel in procession and holds it for the Deacon to read.
At some of the more important services we may have incense and therefore we would have a Thurifer, the person who, in processions or on liturgical occasions carries the thurible or censer (a metal brazier hanging from chains and fitted with a lid) in which incense is burnt.
We may also have a "boat boy/girl" who carries the boat, a small dish in which the incense is kept before being added to the thurible.
