Have you been to the Coffee Mornings in church?
If not, you have, missed a treat...
By 10.30 am on Monday 10th May the session was in full swing. Mother was at the helm (Lorna), as usual making everyone welcome and dispersing cups of tea and coffee. Jane had brought along cake to share, and Helen, Maud B, Evelyn, Vi, Joyce, and Jill were settled. Sam and Margaret were discussing the winners of the Daffodil Contest with Marcia. Lisken was attending to the flowers. Father Andrew accompanied by Tony, the Manager of the Community Centre, was showing the new Nursery Manager, Diane around. Passing clergy are not adverse to a piece of cake and a chat if time permits!
The Monday and Wednesday Coffee Mornings started back in the early 80's. Esme, Margaret Booth, Vera and Eve were amongst the first to organise regular coffee mornings and they developed from there.
Jill originally came over in 1989 "to see what was going on" and was made so welcome by Vera that she made St. George's her church Joyce brought along a friend to church who was impressed by how friendly everyone was.
Other regulars over the years have been some of our fury friends. Lorna's faithful dog Dulcie was a regular for many years and now Claire's Hattie makes an occasional visit surreptitiously under the table. She's a lot large than when she first visited! Though cannot sit still long enough for church services. Marcia's Dolly is adopted by everyone and enjoys edible treats given.
The mornings are all about fellowship - friendships are formed and it is a place to share triumphs and problems. Lots of laughter is heard. If anyone is worried or upset or needs to discuss their aches and pains - then this is the place.
Bernard is busy with his regular Bernard's bargains stall raising money for church. Maud and Kath's recycled cards are popular as is Lorna's homemade preserves and other homemade items that appear.
Even poetry can be heard. A verse from Westminster Bridge by Wordsworth was recited by Jane; apparently a game of cribbage has been known.
More people arrived, Dianna, two Margaret's, Dorothea and Idwal and a Yorkshire terrier was seen entering the building.
People from outside our congregation do pop in sometimes and stay for a cuppa. Some are perhaps early for a hospital appointment or come to visit a loved one in hospital. Other visitors may be interested in visiting and learning a little of St. George's history.
Do pop in if you get a chance - it was agreed that everyone goes out happier than when they came in. A very appropriate advertisement
THE WEDNESDAY COFFEE MORNINGS are organised by Esme who works hard to raise funds for Christian Aid. Originally she supported Sight Savers. As well as being a fellowship group Esme arranges Bring and Buy Sales and makes everyone welcome, and regularly sends cheques to Christian Aid.
Coffee Mornings at St. Georges each Monday and Wednesday from about 10am until 11.30am
Everyone Welcome.
